Handfasting Ceremony

Tying the knot!

Seona and Henry chose to have  a lovely traditional wedding. They married in Mary Immaculate Roman Catholic Church in the historic Bellport village, Long Island, New York.

I was privileged and honoured to be part of their wedding ceremony and read, in front of their gathered family and friends, the wonderful first letter of St Paul to the Corinthians, Chapter 13.

Privately, I performed a very simple and intimate handfasting just for them. Handfasting is an ancient Celtic tradition that dates back to 7000 B.C. Traditionally, when two people were brought to be married, a cord or a piece of material was used to bind the couple’s hands together during the ceremony. This symbolised the joining of two lives and is where the expression ‘tying the knot’ comes from.

Seona and Henry’s now have another lovely keepsake of their wedding, their handfasting ribbons and some great memories to treasure.  Congratulations and every good wish and blessing to Seona and Henry.
